Winter at El Parche: Why the Off-Season Is Our Favourite Season
Everyone talks about the Gold Coast in summer. Fair enough, but if you ask us, winter is when this stretch of coast actually shows off. Quieter beaches, cleaner surf, whales going past on your morning walk, and a sauna and ice bath waiting for you at the end of the day. Here’s why we’d take a winter stay at El Parche over January every time.
The weather is better than you’d think
Gold Coast winters are mild – think sunny days around 20°C, cooling off at night. You don’t need much more than a jumper for the evening and boardies for the day. It’s the kind of weather that makes you actually want to be outside: long beach walks and coffee in the sun.
Whale season is right on your doorstep
From late May through to November, humpback whales migrate past this exact stretch of coast, with July and August the peak months for sightings. You don’t need to book a tour. Grab a coffee, walk across to Bilinga Beach, and keep an eye on the horizon. It’s one of those things that never stops feeling special, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.
The surf gets better, not worse
Winter is when Kirra and the Superbank start firing properly; long, clean, southerly-wind conditions that summer crowds and onshore wind just can’t match. It’s part of why surfers plan trips here specifically for the cooler months. Grab one of our MF Softboards and see for yourself, or just enjoy watching from the sand if you’re not that way inclined.
The sauna and ice bath make more sense in winter
There’s something about stepping from a cool ocean straight into the infrared sauna, or finishing a walk on a crisp morning with a plunge in the ice bath, that just hits differently when the air has a bit of bite to it. Our wellness setup was built for exactly this kind of morning, and it’s at its best from June through August.
Everywhere is quieter
Fewer crowds at the cafes, easier parking, no waiting for a table, and a version of Bilinga and Coolangatta that feels more like the locals’ version than the peak-season one. If you’ve been putting off a Gold Coast trip because you don’t love summer crowds, winter is your window.
Good to know before you book
- Pack layers – mornings and evenings are cool, days are mild and sunny.
- Whale watching is best from the beach or headlands at Snapper Rocks and Kirra Point – no tour required.
- Kirra and the Superbank are working best with a southerly wind, so keep an eye on the forecast if you’re keen to surf.
- Winter is generally a quieter, easier time to book than the summer holiday peak – worth grabbing your dates early if you’re after a longer stay.
